Psychology

Psychology is a scientific discipline which investigates humans with respect to their emotions, thoughts and behaviors as a whole, and yields information and methods about the modification of human behavior and applications concerning the solution to problems. In our psychology department, Brain and Cognition Laboratory, Cognition, Emotion and Cognitive Aging Labaratory, and closed-system mirrored observation-interview laboratories are available for research and course applications. In addition, Psychology Research and Application Center (PUAM) is founded by the psychology department. Clinical Psychology and Cognitive Neuropsychology master’s programs are available at the Institute of Graduate Education.

Students who want to specialize in sub-branches of psychology (Clinical Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Experimental Psychology, Neuropsychology, Forensic Psychology, Psychology of Health, Industry Organizational Psychology, Social Psychology, Sport Psychology, Educational Psychology etc.) first study basic psychology. Basic psychology education includes courses such as research methods and statistics as well as compulsory courses which defines basic field of study of psychology and several elective courses. 

Accreditation:

Accreditation Executive Committee of the Turkish Psychological Association, authorized by the Higher Education Council of Turkey (YÖK), has investigated Bahçeşehir University Undergraduate Psychology Program and has accredited it on March 23, 2017.

Laboratory Information:

Members of the psychology department specialize in cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, clinical psychology, social psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, developmental psychology and neuroscience and they continue their research in these areas. Details of the activities in the departmental laboratories and Psychology Application and Research Center (PUAM) are as follows:

-Brain and Cognition Laboratory: Behavioral and neural basis of cognitive functions such as attention, memory, executive functions and metacognition are investigated with the method of electroencephalography (EEG). The laboratory is equipped with 64-channel EEG system, copper screen isolation and the required software.

- Cognition, Emotion and Cognitive Aging Laboratory: Memory and attention processes and their changes with healthy aging are investigated by taking into account socio-emotional variables.

-Observation-Interview Laboratories: Clinical, developmental and social psychology observations, interviews and research are conducted. Mirrored rooms are equipped with auditory and visual recording systems.

-Psychology Application and Research Center (PUAM): PUAM gathers research units and laboratories within the Psychology Department under one roof and coordinates the scientific studies. Furthermore, PUAM aims to present education and activities not only for the purpose of contributing to the education of our undergraduate and graduate students, but also for the benefit of society and disadvantaged groups.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the department of psychology may work in private and public bodies and institutions that offer psychological consultancy and therapy, hospitals and consultancy centers; education institutions and related departments of private companies; as well as in fields such as personnel employment, allocation, assessment, training and personnel and public communication areas.  They may also be employed in advertisement, public relations, sales and marketing, media, market research and similar fields. Kindergartens, day-care centers, schools, neurology and rehabilitation centers, research institutions, administrative and research centers in specific ministries (i.e., Ministry of Health, Department of Mental Health; Ministry of Justice etc.) employ graduates of department of psychology in various positions.
